What's With the Name?

In Greek mythology, Prometheus' name means forethought.

Zeus, leader of the gods, took no interest in the race of mortal men on earth. He merely planned for them to live as primitives until they finally died off. Zeus said that knowledge and divine gifts would only bring misery to the mortals -- and he insisted that Prometheus not interfere with his plans.

Despite Zeus' warning, Prometheus took pity on the undeveloped mortals and deceived Zeus. Prometheus gave the mortals all types of cool gifts: numbers, the alphabet, prophesy (the precursor of public relations), signs in the sky, the mining of precious metals, and art.

And to really tick off Zeus, Prometheus had stolen fire from Zeus and given it to the mortals in their dark caves.

The gift of divine fire unleashed a flood of inventiveness and productivity in the rapidly developing humans. In a very short time (by immortal standards, anyway), culture, art, and literacy permeated the land around Olympus.
